Book Summary:

"With this profound and magnificent book, drawing on his deep reservoir of thought and expertise in the humanities, James MacGregor Burns takes us into the fire's center. As a 21st-century philosopher, he brings to vivid life the incandescent personalities and ideas that embody the best in Western civilization and shows us how understanding them is essential for anyone who would seek to decipher the complex problems and potentialities of the world we will live in tomorrow." --Michael Beschloss, New York Times bestselling author of Presidential Courage: Brave Leaders and How They Changed America, 1789-1989 "James MacGregor Burns is a national treasure, and Fire and Light is the elegiac capstone to a career devoted to understanding the seminal ideas that made America - for better and for worse - what it is." --Joseph J. Ellis, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winning author Revolutionary Summer Pulitzer Prize-winning and bestselling historian James MacGregor Burns explores the most daring and transformational intellectual movement in history, the European and American Enlightenment In this engaging, provocative history, James MacGregor Burns brilliantly illuminates the two-hundred-year conflagration of the Enlightenment, when audacious questions and astonishing ideas tore across Europe and the New World, transforming thought, overturning governments, and inspiring visionary political experiments. Fire and Light brings to vivid life the galaxy of revolutionary leaders of thought and action who, armed with a new sense of human possibility, driven by a hunger for change, created the modern world. Burns discovers the origins of a distinctive American Enlightenment in men like the Founding Fathers Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison, and their early encounters with incendiary European ideas about liberty and equality. It was these thinker-activists who framed the United States as a grand and continuing experiment in Enlightenment principles. Today the same questions Enlightenment thinkers grappled with have taken on new urgency around the world: in the turmoil of the Arab Spring, in the former Soviet Union, and China, as well as in the United States itself. What should a nation be? What should citizens expect from their government? Who should lead and how can leadership be made both effective and accountable? What is happiness, and what can the state contribute to it? Burns's exploration of the ideals and arguments that formed the bedrock of our modern world shines a new light on these ever-important questions.

Book Summary:

The past and present collide as five women work to save the summer camp of their youth in this heartwarming novel from Kaya McLaren, The Firelight Girls The summers you spend at summer camp are indelibly etched on your heart. But what happens when the camp you love is about to close? Can you ever really say goodbye to the place that made you who you are? These are the questions that plagues Ethel, the seventy-year-old former camp director who is nursing a broken heart after losing the love of her life as she now faces the impending closure of the camp on Lake Wenatchee that she called home. It's also a question that inspires change in forty-year-old Shannon, who spent the summers of her youth as a vibrant, capable camp counselor and is now directionless after watching her career implode. And there's Laura, who has lost all intimacy with her husband and doesn't know if she can save what seems to be gone forever. Finally, Ruby, who betrayed Ethel years ago and hasn't spoken to her since, hopes this will be her chance to make amends. When the four women learn that a homeless teen has been hiding at camp, they realize camp is something much more immediate for all: survival. And so the three generations of women search for a way to save the place that saved them all, finding in the process a way back to themselves and each other in The Firelight Girls, Kaya McLaren's novel of love and loss, heartbreak and healing.

Book Summary:

In about the year 1900, in a pleasant old town by the sea, lived a lad who was very, very fond of fairy tales. When he had read all the fairy-books which his parents and his uncles and his cousins and his sisters and his aunts had been kind enough to give him, he turned to the town library and read every single fairy tale he could find mentioned in the catalogue. But there was an end even to this treasure; and, finally, a day came when the fairy-tale lover could find no new tales to read. Every Christmas he would peek at the new books in the bookshops, only to find the same old stories printed, with new pictures, meant to please grown-ups. What could be the matter? Had the fairies all gone away, or locked the doors of Fairyland? Where, where, where were the new stories, and why, why, why didn't people write them? Some years passed. One pleasant summer day, as the fairy-tale lover sat reading a book beneath the low spreading branches of an oak tree, he heard a hum of wings, and looking up startled from his book, he discovered the Fairy Goldenwand standing close by. "Are you still seeking new fairy tales?" asked the Fairy Goldenwand. "Yes," said the reader. "Will you write them down if I tell you some really new ones?" said the Fairy. "Oh yes, indeed," said the reader. "And I'll put them into a book; and next Saturday Mr. Day, the artist, will come down; we shall have tea here under the oak tree,--do you like hot buttered toast?--and you must tell him all about the fashions in Fairyland." "Oh, that will be fine!" said the Fairy Goldenwand. "I knew you wouldn't mind my appearing so suddenly. Ever so many things have happened in Fairyland since the last books were written, and we all think it's a dreadful shame that children haven't heard about them. Just imagine boys and girls not knowing about the adventures of the Prince in Lantern Land! Shall I tell you the story?" And that's the way the author heard about the Shepherd of Clouds, Florian, Marianna, Giles, Bobo, and all the other new friends. That you may long enjoy their adventures is the wish of. In addition, the 13 illustrations by Maurice E. Day bring an added depth to the stories and to the reader. So, now you know how the stories in this book came to be. The stories that Fairy Goldenwand gave the Fairy Tale Lover are: The Queen Of Lantern Land The Adventures Of Florian The Seller Of Dreams The Treasure Castle Prince Sneeze Marianna The Lost Half-Hour The Enchanted Elm The Bird-Boy The Master Mariner The Marvelous Dog And The Wonderful Cat The Shepherd Of Clouds The City Under The Sea ============== TAGS: Folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, childrens, fables, firelight, camp fire, fireplace, queen, lantern land, adventures, Florian, seller, dreams, treasure, castle, prince sneeze, Marianna, lost, half-hour, enchanted elm, bird-boy, master mariner, marvellous, dog, wonderful cat, shepherd, clouds, city under the sea, Prince, princess, king, queen, journey, caverns, Over hill, over dale, follow, magic ball, dream cost, Peter, golden florin, three rogues, locked, flying room, chest of secrets, black stone, world, yellow bird, dragon's mouth, widest, maiden, watch woodcutter, wood, birthday, gray bird, Splash, fell, sea, lessons, Giles, task, open the door, cloud-bowl, three days, Merchant, pursue, ship, fiery sails

Book Summary:

Longing for Home provides a template and encourages others to try remarkable things as a family. Beginning in the spring of 1983, Brad Burgess, the eldest son of the Stan Burgess family, accepted a photographers position on an archaeological expedition in the Middle East. His stories stirred the longing for adventures beyond the Ozark Mountains for the rest of his family. Then in the summer of 1985 to late spring of 1986, the remaining six members of the family Burgess left their comfortable country home in Southwest Missouri and began an adventure of a lifetime. Beginning in London they felt the harassment of being American. Other extended cultural experiences were waiting to meet them beginning as they landed at Lode Airport in Tel Aviv. Soon the expected Israeli-Palestinian disputes were heightened as other foreigners, who were living at Tantur Ecumenical Center, became sympathetic to different perspectives. Here the four children, along with their parents, were to learn lifelong lessons. The main snippets format of Longing for Home was taken from the Diary of Justin David Burgess. His perspective could be contrasted to those found in The Diary of Adrian Mole as one reads of social conflicts through the eyes of a preteen. Their use of humor and sometimes pathos brings one to feel with them as they write their inner thoughts and feelings in poetry and prose. Davids (eleven years) attention to writing in his diary is judicious through this time period. The story blossoms with the letters and oral stories of the remaining family members: Brad, Matthew, Scott, Mandy, Ruth, and Stan. Extraordinary challenges await those who seek intercultural experiences. Subsequently, the reality of home changes as the adventure becomes a reality. Is home an ancient or a contemporary place? Does home become an illusion as one ponders the significance of modernity and a possible eternity? Perhaps like Odysseus in Greek mythology, one must meet the threats of the trip, all the while yearning to return home. From these acts of bravery emerges a satisfaction equivalent to grasping a holy grail.

Lighting for Cinematography

Book Summary:

We can't shoot good pictures without good lighting, no matter how good the newest cameras are. Shooting under available light gives exposure, but lacks depth, contrast, contour, atmosphere and often separation. The story could be the greatest in the world, but if the lighting is poor viewers will assume it's amateurish and not take it seriously. Feature films and TV shows, commercials and industrial videos, reality TV and documentaries, even event and wedding videos tell stories. Good lighting can make them look real, while real lighting often makes them look fake. Lighting for Cinematography, the first volume in the new CineTech Guides to the Film Crafts series, is the indispensable guide for film and video lighting. Written by veteran gaffer and cinematographer David Landau, the book helps the reader create lighting that supports the emotional moment of the scene, contributes to the atmosphere of the story and augments an artistic style. Structured to mimic a 14 week semester, the chapters cover such things as lighting for movement, working with windows, night lighting, lighting the three plains of action and non-fiction lighting. Every chapter includes stills, lighting diagrams and key advice from professionals in the field, as well as lighting exercises to help the reader put into practice what was covered.

Book Summary:

The InsideOut Literary Arts Project (iO) began in 1995 in five Detroit high schools, with weekly classroom visits by a writer-in-residence, the publication of a literary journal for each school, and the mission of encouraging students to use poetry to “think broadly, create bravely, and share their voices with the wider world.” Twenty years later, the program serves some five thousand K–12 students per year, has received national exposure and accolades (including a recent visit to the White House), and has seen numerous student writers recognized for their creativity and performance. In To Light a Fire: 20 Years with the InsideOut Literary Arts Project, founding director Terry Blackhawk and senior writer Peter Markus collect the experiences of writers who have participated in InsideOut over the years to give readers an inside look at the urban classroom and the creative spark of Detroit’s students. In short and insightful essays, contributors discuss how iO’s creative magic happened during the course of their work in Detroit schools. Poets such as Jamaal May, John Rybicki, Robert Fanning, and francine j. harris describe the many ways that poetry can be used as a tool to reach others, and how poetic work shaped them as teachers in return. Contributors describe nurturing a love of language, guiding excursions into imagination, and helping students find their own voices. They also describe the difficulties of getting through to kids, the challenges of oversized classrooms, and of working with children who seem to have been forgotten. Despite their own frequent angst and personal uncertainties about doing the right thing, they describe the joys and rewards that come from believing in students and supporting the risks that they take as writers. To Light a Fire captures the story—one poet, poem, and poetic moment at a time—of helping students to discover they can imagine, dream, and speak in a way that will make people listen. Fellow educators, poets, and creative writers will be moved and inspired by this collection.

The trouble starts when Cat’s uncle, the town sheriff, informs her that the young man’s been found dead in a hot tub. Then Christina shows up crying and covered in blood. Now, between a murder mystery, the theft of a rare Hemingway edition, and the arrival of a black-clad stranger in snowy Aspen Hills, Cat’s afraid everything’s going downhill.

She will defy the most powerful pope in history. As the 13th century dawns across Occitania, a brash viscountess named Esclarmonde de Foix champions her persecuted faith and shocks the Church by debating its greatest monastic minds. Centuries later, she is still revered as the Cathar Joan of Arc. Spiritual upheaval shakes Latin Christendom. In Rome, Pope Innocent III plots to crush a growing pacifist sect that preaches Christ's mission has been corrupted. In the Holy Land, warrior-monks make a disturbing discovery. In southern France, roving troubadours sing of a Holy Grail that offers salvation through the intercession of a worthy lady. And in the foothills of the Pyrenees, war clouds approach Esclarmonde's hunted heretics, who protect an ancient scroll containing shattering revelations. Declared outlaws by the Church, the Occitan knights who defend Esclarmonde's family and followers determine to make their last stand atop Montsegur, a haunting mountain keep that protects a sacred treasure. Their heroic resistance against the papal and French armies evokes the legendary defiance of the Jewish rebels against the Roman legions at Masada. In this day and age, people often define their religious truths in black and white. Comforting, sure, but how to apply such absolutes in a concrete, meaningful way to everyday life? In this sermon series, Dr. Chuck Simmons asks the Christian reader to consider that God – and therefore truth – lies in the muddle of that everyday life. His compilation explores the very human concepts of patience, doubt, forgiveness, cynicism, wonder, and hope. Followers of Jesus Christ will want to chew on Simmons’ words, each chapter calling on them to reevaluate and reaffirm their beliefs as they walk their muddled path through a life of faith and love.

Book Summary:

A book of modern mysticism about rediscovering the true meaning of faith and how to reclaim our spiritual wisdom. Light on Fire is the soulful exploration of one woman's journey to awakening and becoming a modern-day Christian mystic. It's a compassionate guide that will support others on the path to awakening by offering new insights and practical guidance on how to reconnect with our innate spirituality. In her search to understand her own spontaneous awakening, Aedamar discovered that awakening is a natural life process from which we have become estranged. In beautifully poetic language, and through accessible philosophy, Aedamar shares how and why we are designed to wake up, and to experience Divine Union, in the ordinary course of life. Waking up is what is now needed to heal ourselves and the deeply rooted traumas of Western society. Light on Fire concludes with 'The Path of Gold', Aedamar's seven-stage guide to awakening that offers a model for rediscovering Divine Love in everyday life. It helps us to reconnect with our spiritual wisdom, which is critical as we enter a new era that uniquely calls us to mysticism and to love.
